I love going to Washington DC on the train and I was given a special treat last Friday afternoon when I traveled on the Acela Express so that I could arrive at Union Station by 4 pm. That train was flying! I don’t seem to remember these trains going so fast but then maybe it’s been a while. Mrs. Mac, my wonderful mother-in-law came to pick me up at the train station and then we drove through the heavy traffic stopping briefly at her home to pick up some copies of my Jamaican coffee table book and then we headed on to Potomac in Maryland.
It was quite a chilly evening and we arrived at the lovely home of Mr. Birendar Singh who had elected to be the host for the evening. There was to be a welcome dinner for the newly appointed Jamaican Ambassador Mr. Ralph Thomas and his lovely wife Sondra. This was also a wonderful opportunity for me to present him with a copy of my new book and when the charming couple arrived the presentation was made almost immediately. They received the book so graciously and with much enthusiasm. I was very pleased with the outcome. Birendar also made a presentation of his book.
It turns out that the Ambassador and his wife are lovers of stained glass so they did take a particular interest in the church images in the book, much to my delight.
The other guests that were present at this small yet stimulating gathering were Vashi Henriques, Doris Carroll and her daughter Rochelle Carroll. Aunt Doris, as I call her is the sister to Hilda McIntosh, my mother-in-law. In total we were a group of eight that was intimate and friendly. The food was delicious and enjoyed by all. It was indeed a lovely evening!
I spent the night at Mrs. Mac’s condo resting peacefully on the 23rd floor and woke up the following morning to a nourishing breakfast that she so kindly made for me. I signed some more Jamaican coffee table books, and then she drove me back to the train station, this time traveling on the North East Regional train and in no time, I was heading back home to Wilmington, Delaware.
