Aren’t trees wonderful?! They enrich our lives in so many ways and apart from being so majestic and beautiful, they can shade us, feed us and most importantly help us to breathe! And we must not forget that’s where we get wood and paper from as well, things that we couldn’t live without, could we?
For me, trees go even further…as an artist I can find such inspiration in their form when I look at them. I also think of them as very symbolic because I think that a tree can tell a story, as it really has had to stand the test of time in order to survive. When you look at a tree, you can tell a lot about what it’s been through by its shape and form and to me, that’s how it speaks to you.
I especially love the gnarled and weathered trees that have all kinds of twists and turns in their trunks and branches created by the natural elements. That’s what gives them such character and makes them so interesting to draw and paint – no wonder so many artists had such a field day with painting trees! I myself have done various paintings using trees as the main theme such as “Malcolm’s Tree”, “Tree Tribute” and “Hamptons Trees” to name a few. And I loved every minute of painting them!
So today I pay tribute to the trees. I think we should honour and respect them for they are so truly important to the Earth. We can all do this by planting new trees to replace the lost ones and caring for the ones that are still living.
I would also like to share with you the names of some of my favourite trees. In Jamaica, they are the Lignum Vitae, Poui and Poinciana. In North America, the Red Bud, Japanese Maple and Dogwood are some that I have come to know and love more recently. Happy tree planting to you all!
