It’s sad to say but it’s that time of year when the summer is officially just about over, at least it is here on the East Coast. There are however, much to my delight, some leftovers from the ‘sun season’ that continue to linger, and I have been taking advantage of their presence. I speak of the glorious plants and flowers that remain in the days of September and how thrilled I am for them to still be here.
Being an artist, I’m constantly on the lookout for new subject matter, and nature is my primary muse. Thus, when I see the colors and shapes of plants and flowers that really strike me, I get so excited and want to reach for the nearest camera that can truly capture what I am seeing in the moment.
We are very fortunate in that we live in a beautiful part of Delaware and there are some wonderful gardens that can be found just a stone’s throw away from our house. The shapes, forms and colors that I have been able to recently capture by way of photographs has left me feeling so fulfilled and gratified. I am now looking forward to how some of these images may possibly unfold as paintings.
It really is a journey for me as to what can come from a few clicks of a camera one morning, then doing some sketches, making some decisions and then from one of those sketches hopefully painting a finished piece. Who knows if it will even end up happening and as I’ve said before, the feeling for the painting, that critical ingredient, has to be there in order for the painting to ‘come together’. What I do know is that when I allow myself to find the happiness in the process, the beauty always follows.
