Starfish Cay ~ spending Sunday at the beach

Should I go to Starfish Cay? Should I stay? What a dilemma I was having that morning, as there I was in two minds over whether to go out on the boat with my sister and her family last Sunday. It was a toss, as going would mean that we would be out there ALL DAY and staying at home would mean missing my last chance to go to the beach during my entire trip to Jamaica. So, I decided to go – maybe I would get some inspiration for my art and that was the end of that.

Needless to say, it did end up being an all day beach affair, however I really was most fortunate to at least have had the opportunity to do so and despite the cons of going, I think I made the better choice.

Overall, the weather was pretty good at the Cay (or should I say the tiny sand bar called Starfish Cay) that we went to. It did threaten to rain at one point but thankfully changed its mind.

Shortly after we arrived, the powerboats came laden with party people accompanied by their sound systems. I think I must be the only Jamaican-born person on the planet who dislikes loud music blasting at the beach, and blast it did! My noise cancelling air phones did quell the volume to some degree and then, I just tried to relax into the heavy bass. This is Jamaica after all.

We eventually departed that fair sandbar at around 4pm that evening and everyone had gotten their fair share of sun by then including me. I think the best part of being out there that day was being able to see the backdrop of Kingston and the glorious mountains that surround her in the distance from the Cay, reminding me of the intrinsic beauty of Jamaica. This I find is always a most timeless and inspiring vista and it connects me to my Island home in a profound way.

See you next time at the beach!
