Discipline and what comes next

Juliet painting at her canvas

It’s been quite a summer this year. It started off with a bang in Kingston, Jamaica with the book launch at the end of June, and then being greeted by friends and family back at home in Delaware, with various other people coming and going as well. Now, in August, with the Rio Olympics in the air and more people still coming and going….in between I have been making my various and assorted attempts to write blogs amidst all the activity in the house, which hasn’t always been easy, what with trying to find a place of solitude amidst the chaos. Writing doesn’t come as easily to me as painting does I have to say, much less when I’m trying to do it in a rather noisy environment.

Anyhow, things seems to be settling down more now as most of the family and friends have left to go back to their respective homes and our house will soon be returning to its former state of relative quiet and tranquility.

In these few remaining weeks of summer I hope to catch some of the Olympic Track & Field events, immerse myself in some painting and get ready for the fall.

It’s funny though that as much as I love the summer period, I do miss having my regular routine and structure that I usually have for the rest of the year, as I start to feel like I’m getting out of sync with myself. I now feel the need to get focused and get back on track with my daily routine and interestingly enough, I’m finding the inspiration and motivation that I need about that right now, from none other than some of the Olympic athletes. I think that the discipline they have that has clearly taken them to where they are now, is a true testament that staying the course really does pay off. And when I see how these athletes are out there representing their countries with such pride, grace and spirit combined with this discipline that got them there, nothing could be more encouraging to me. I’m looking forward to the weeks ahead being able to get back into gear and reconnecting with the Olympian that resides in all of us!
