The Positive Light of Transition

Today I would like to talk about the transitional state of the weather and and how it can affect us in a number of ways. Up until recently, the fall here in Delaware was relatively warm, however now that has started to change. The days are getting colder, with shorter days and longer nights. Most of the beautiful leaves have finally fallen off the trees. Our yard is a true testament to this, as there are leaves just about everywhere.

The colors of the outdoors now seem to fade into a more winter-like landscape. This isn’t the most inspiring artistic scenery for me and it’s interesting how it can start to affect one’s mood if you allow it to. So, for those of us who live in these northern climates, it’s important that we are proactive and do the kinds of things that will uplift our senses or our spirits. Intentionally bringing good cheer or vibrancy into our environments through color, music, smell, taste or company are definitely some of the channels to counteract low moods that can be brought on by the changes or transitions of the weather. The right light is also another positive way to help to bring back the sparkle.

I’m always in search of the perfect light for painting and when I find it, it feels so natural and things flow so easily. Allowing myself not to be consumed by the transitions of the weather and life can be challenging, as transitions often provoke anxiety and fears. They can consume us, but only if we allow them to. What we often forget is that the light has never left us and burns constantly within us. I suppose the key to my creativity is to never forget that the light that flows through us and exists around us is always a constant. Sometimes we just get distracted.
