Vincent van Gogh ~ A Magnificent Inspiration

“Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh

So it’s one of those grey and rainy mornings and I’m just not feeling the creative juices flowing….thank goodness that when I check my email, I find that Pinterest has sent me the topic of Vincent van Gogh to follow. Vincent just happens to be one, if not my favorite painter of all time. Not only are his paintings an absolute inspiration to my senses, but they also seem to lift my entire spirit. The colors, the textures, the movement and the passion in his brush strokes are absolutely pure genius. His approach to painting is what I strive for as an artist myself and I am so grateful for this man’s existence as a painter. When you look at a painting such as “Starry Night”, you are transported from the earth to a night sky that dances with magic and whimsy and takes you away.

Vincent also contributed (in my opinion) many words or sayings of great meaning and depth. To quote a few: “I feel that there is nothing more artistic than loving people” and “I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day” are some of them. What insight and perception into life this man seemed to hold! He really was in tune with nature and that I believe is truly a gift!

When I was first introduced to van Gogh’s art as an art student, I didn’t care for it nor did I understand it. Fortunately however, over the years his works grew on me and then they became a love of mine. It’s funny how that can happen and has probably happened to so many others.

I share these thoughts about Vincent van Gogh with you as looking at his works and words has helped to lift and redirect my day which is what I really needed. It’s a gift for the week and through his work and his words we can get an understanding not just about his life, but about life in general. That is a great gift of his to us.
